He was graduated in medicine from the University of Oporto in 1951.
After joining the army medical corps in 1953 he was posted as a doctor to the Vasco da Gama battalion and served with them in Goa from 1954 to 1957. He was transferred to the medical branch of the Ministry of Overseas Provinces and returned to Goa to supervise medical services for civilians as the Goa take-over was being mounted in December 1961.
He was appointed in December 1962 to the directorate of Health Services in Angola and in October 1965 he returned to Portugal to become instructor at the Air Force Air Safety School. In 1966 he moved to the Air Force Advanced Studies College, then went back to Angola in April 1968 as head of the Health Services, a post he held until his appointment to the Mozambique administration.
