He was a member of the editorial staff of the Yomiuri newspaper and the Kokusai News Agency. In 1924, he started Bungei Sensen (Literary Front), a magazine promoting the proletarian literary movement. He later abandoned his leftist stand and turned a neutral and became a member of the staff of the "Bungakukai", a literary magazine. At present, he is regarded as a veteran critic. The Yomiuri newspaper awarded a prize for his "Essays on Modern Literature" in 1950.
