(Long cherished in out-of-print editions, anthologies and ...)
Long cherished in out-of-print editions, anthologies and textbooks, and more recently celebrated on the internet, the groundbreaking Concrete and Minimalist poems of Aram Saroyan (born 1943) are gathered together here in a single, much-needed volume. Working in the 1960s among the so-called Second Generation New York School of poetry and the international Concrete poetry movement, but also informed by Conceptual art, Saroyan brought an intense focus to the sensuality of words--often single words--highlighting their material strangeness. Among the most popular of these poems are the infamous "lighght" (singled out by Senator Jesse Helms, who publicly lambasted the poem when its author received an NEA award), "eyeye," and his four-legged letter "m." "Even a five-word poem has a beginning, middle and end," Saroyan once stated; "A one-word poem doesn't. You can see it all at once. It's instant." Complete Minimal Poems reissues the entirety of Saroyan's rare collections Aram Saroyan, Pages and The Rest for the first time, as well as his well-known "Electric Poems" (originally published in the 1972 All Stars anthology) and the previously unpublished sequence "Short Poems." The first edition of Complete Minimal Poems was published in 2007, receiving praise in The New York Times and winning the 2008 William Carlos Williams Award. This reprint of that edition includes a new preface by Ron Silliman.

This is one of the strangest true-crime stories ever written: a story of murder, reported rape, abduction and multiple personalities. It contains all of the ingredients of a chilling page-turner. Saroyan writes nonfiction as compelling as a great novel. Readers won't stop until the last page.

(Memoir. Cultural Writing. Son and biographer of William S...)
Memoir. Cultural Writing. Son and biographer of William Saroyan, Aram Saroyan grew up in a world of celebrities and geniuses. His writings soon placed him among the best known figures in the New York School of poets, and his essays and reviews helped to characterize his generation. STARTING OUT IN THE SIXTIES is a powerful collection of essays, memoirs, and reflections with commentary and anecdotes about publishing, Allen Ginsberg, Andy Warhol, Jack Kerouac, the author's Armenian heritage, his famous father, Jerry Brown, and much, much more. Variously humorous, reflective, and profound, Saroyan's book should prove for years to come, a key guide to the taste and literary values of the generation that 'started out in the sixties.'

(Poetry. DAY AND NIGHT collects Aram Saroyan's poems writt...)
Poetry. DAY AND NIGHT collects Aram Saroyan's poems written in Bolinas in the 70s and 80s when he was a part of the well-known writers' community there. Previously, Saroyan was known for very short poems -- as, for example, his one-word poem "lighght" which became the subject of ongoing decades-long government and public debate after being chosen for a National Endowoment for the Arts Poetry Award by Robert Duncan in 1968. DAY AND NIGHT includes Saroyan's longer work. "As a writer in Bolinas, I eventually moved from an initial concentration on poetry into prose. As this happened, my poetry became more sporadic, and, I hope, as befits the passage from 28 to 37 years old, deepened. The title poem of this collection, "Day and Night," was also the last I worte in Bolinas ..." ("Afterword'). A past president of PEN Center West, Saroyan is a faculty member of the Masters of Professional Writing Program at USC. He lives with his family in Santa Monica. 3/19/99

(Hollywood is a highly charged electromagnetic field, and ...)
Hollywood is a highly charged electromagnetic field, and it draws toward itself certain kinds of artistic temperaments. Regardless of the lies these artists tell themselves lies about the integrity of their work, the extent of their talent, and the sanctity of their personal relationships they are each pulled toward the town's magnetic core: that is, toward the money. This collection of fourteen stories describes the various angles, acute and obtuse, at which certain individual artists, mainly aging actors and blocked and balky screenwriters, stand in relation to Hollywood's money-magnet. "My Literary Life," one of the two novellas that anchor this collection, describes the dual life of Jamie Read, a Manhattan novelist who has compromised his self-image and his literary standing by adapting his "serious" first novel (Sometimes a Moron) into the screenplay for a big-budget "popcorn" comedy (Beverly Hills Moron). It and the twelve short stories gathered here each a satirical glimpse into the lives of agents, actors, hacks, and flaks collectively make up one of the most astute skewerings of bi-coastal artistic hustling since The Player. In contrast, the other novella, "Love Scenes," is a fine slice of domestic realism: a portrait of a divorced, fortyish actor named Wesley Sender a supporting player, never a star, the small roles now coming smaller and farther apart. When at last (and unexpectedly) he lands a major part the romantic lead in an indie feature he plumbs his past for the bittersweet moments that he must draw on for inspiration, a parade of sexy, dramatic, sad, and mundane vignettes with his ex-wife, his latest girlfriend, and girls and women he has only fantasized about loving, including the leading lady in the film he's now shooting. In the end, Saroyan writes, Artists in Trouble is not only about Hollywood but also about creative persons everywhere as they weather the middle of life's journey. These are stories about the generations mentor and pupil, older self and younger self, parent and child "and the way the world is in the dark when we discover we are lost."

While vividly evoking Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs, this celebrated Beat Generation biography focuses on Lew Welch, the poet who lived the American Dream as an advertising man (shades of Mad Men) before dropping out. “My pick for the best written literary bio of anybody, ever,” writes Richard Meltzer in The Rolling Stone Book of the Beats. Includes classic photographs.
