Background
Archibald Clavering Gunter was born in Liverpool, England on October 25, 1847.
(Mr. Burton H. Barnes, of New York, to the venerable host ...)
Mr. Burton H. Barnes, of New York, to the venerable host of the very old and very dilapidated little inn that stands on the shores of the Grulf of Ajaccio, near where the Bastia road turns inland, and, following up the Gravona torrent, first through the orange and citron groves of the fertile Campoloro and then over hills covered with the vine and olive, is lost in the chestnut woods that hide the lower slopes of the great Monte del Oro. Nothing can be in more vivid and striking contrast than the man and his surroundings; the light civilization of an exponent of New York fashion of the year 1882 stands face to face with the barbaric romance of the old Corsican scene and the mediaeval picturesqueness of the native costume of the old inn-keeper, who curiously asks, in his soft, southern patois, ignoring the French in which Mr. Barnes has addressed him, "The spot for what, Signor? "The spot where there is going to be a first-class duel this morning, as soon as there is light enough to kill" "To kill what" "Each other! Don tyou know what a duel is" Here Mr. Barnes gives a short dissertation on the code of honor, illustrating his French with vigorous pantomimic action. "Ah! a kind of vendetta" says the old man, brightening. "Yes, a civilized vendetta. You know what that is, Ive no doubt" About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology. (The Fighting Troubadour. BOOK I. A GIFT OF THE BATTLEFIEL...)
The Fighting Troubadour. BOOK I. A GIFT OF THE BATTLEFIELD. CHAPTER I. THE FIGHT AT CHIARI. Is there an Englishman within the sound of my voice? The words come slowly from a dying officer, gasped out through pale and dusty lips, as the surgeon turns from him with a look that shows the patient is beyond his skill. Though the timbre of the sufferer's voice is Saxon, the words are faltered out in perfect Italian. Would you not like a priest? whispers the surgeon. No priest for me yet. I have a prior duty. ( About the Book Books dealing with State and local histo...)
About the Book Books dealing with State and local histories in the United States may examine a city, a suburb, a municipality, a region, a community, an association, a church group, or the entire State. In fact, local history, is the largest category of history publishing. Often being of the community that is the subject of the book, local or regional historians can provide a specific insight into their subject matter. Also in this Book The next decades up to World War 1 saw large migrations from Europe and massive growth in the US economy. The US had a short but decisive influence on World War 1, suffered during the Great Depression, and had an even greater decisive influence on the outcome of World War 2. The US then engaged in a Cold War with its military and ideological adversary, the USSR, which disintegrated in 1991. Over the 20th century the US was not just a dynamo of technological advancement, but also contributed greatly to world growth. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

( About the Book In historical fiction the plot is set in...)
About the Book In historical fiction the plot is set in the past, and pays attention to the manners, social conditions and other details of the period portrayed. Some authors choose to include famous historical figures in their fictional plots, so that audiences can imagine how those individuals might have responded to the plots and environments established by the author. The Western literary component of this genre is founded in the early 19th century works of such authors as Sir Walter Scott, Honoré de Balzac, James Fenimore Cooper, and Leo Tolstoy. Also in this Book The romance novel, which is sometimes termed the romantic novel, places its primary focus on the development of a romantic relationship and love between two people. The sub-genres of the romance novel include: fantasy, historical romance, paranormal fiction, and science fiction. Romance novels existed in ancient Greece, and were also to be found in the literary fiction of the 18th and 19th centuries in the works of such authors as Samuel Richardson and Jane Austen. Also in this Book Titles covering drama and theater in the United States describe that part of the European theatrical tradition, dating back to ancient Greek theater, that is heavily influenced by British theatre. US drama has been heavily focussed on New York City at Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway. Outside of New York, larger cities have professional regional or resident theater companies that produce their own seasons. some works aspiring to eventually play in New York. US theater also has an active community theater culture, relying on local volunteers. Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

Excerpt from Prince Karl: Novelized From the Play A very handsome brunette is Miss Alicia, with glossy black hair, a rich creamy complexion and very tempting red lips, although she assumes a very severe, almost masculine, air as she says to the hotel proprietor in a clear, authoritative tone: Mr. Markey Davis, Mrs. Lowell wants her bill made out. Mr. Davis, somewhat startled by Miss Lowell's abrupt manner and per haps confused by the beauty of the marble-like bust and shoulders that rise from her evening gown, places his hand behind his ear, stammering: Eh? Bill? Bill who? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Archibald Clavering Gunter was born in Liverpool, England on October 25, 1847.
He was brought to New York by his parents when he was six years old. After New York the family soon moved to San Francisco, where Archibald Clavering Gunter attended the public schools and the recently opened school of mines of the state university.
In 1868 Archibald Clavering Gunter secured a position as civil engineer with the Central Pacific Railroad. Next year he was employed as a chemist in the laboratory of an assayer in San Francisco.
Then for several years he was in Utah, first as chemist in a smelting works and then as superintendent of a mine.
In 1874 he returned to San Francisco, worked for a year in a stock-broker’s office, and then set up a brokerage business of his own.
In 1879 he moved to New York, where, except for travel, he remained for the rest of his life. Just when he first essayed authorship is unknown, but Found the True Vein (San Francisco, 1872) appears to be his oldest surviving work. It is a five-act play, with scenes in a Pullman “palace” car and in the depths of a mine, and among the dramatis personae are characters similar in type to those that Bret Harte was then beginning to exploit—a stage driver, a Chinese, several miners, and a supercilious young woman from the East.
Gunter was also the author of Prince Karl (produced at the Boston Museum, April 5, 1886) in which Richard Mansfield scored his earliest success, and of a number of other plays, including Two Nights in Rome, The Deacon’s Daughter, Polly Middles, and Fresh, the American.
On November 8, 1886, he married Esther Lisbeth Burns, who was the niece of George Henry Story, the curator of paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She became the capable manager of the Home Publishing Company, which Gunter had or-
ganized to publish his first novel, Mr. Barnes of New York (1887). The story deals with the adventures in Europe of a rich and impudent young American. It had been declined by all the large publishers in New York, but when Gunter brought it out at his own risk it scored the most sensational success in the history of American publishing. More than one million copies of the book were sold in the United States; in England it was pirated simultaneously by six different publishers. During the next six or seven years Gunter was the most widely read of American novelists; whoever read novels read the Gunter novels; his books, in their yellow paper covers, seemed almost ubiquitous. After Mr. Potter of Texas (1888), That Frenchman ! (1889), Miss Nobody of Nowhere (1890), Miss Dividends (1892), Baron Montez of Panama and Paris (1893), The King's Stockbroker (1894), and A Princess of Paris (1894), bis vein of story-telling began to run a little thin, and his public declined, but he continued to write at least one novel a year, and died with his pen in his hand.

His writing abounds in solecisms and anachronisms, his technique was crude, but the
public liked his stories anyway. His success was made without advertising and without assistance from critics.
