Joined the 17th Regiment of Foot, 1854. Served in Crimea, 1855-1856. Present at siege of Sebastopol and assault on Redan, bombardment and surrender of Fort Kinburn (medal with clasp and Turkish medal).
Afghan War, 1878-1879. With First Division Peshawar Valley Field Force, capture of Ali Musjid, Expeditions to Bazar Valley, and action of Deh Suruk (despatches, medal and clasp). Promoted Major-General, 1891.
Commanded a Brigade at Aidershot, 1892-1895. Reward for Distinguished and Meritorious Service, 1894. Colonel of the Leicestershire Regiment, 1905. Retired.
