Studied at Bedford Grammar School (exhibitioner). Queen’s College, Oxford, (scholar).
Entered consular service as student interpreter. Acting Vice-Consul at Beyrout, Damascus, and Cairo, and in charge of Archives at Cairo Consulate General for fortnight preceding bombardment of Alexandria. After which attached to Lord Charles Beresford, and to Headquarter Staff of Lord Wolseley (despatches, medal and clasps, with Khedive’s Star).
Attached to Sir Charles WiLon, and watched Arabi Court Martial on behalf of British Government. Attached on special service to Sir H. D. Wolff, Lord Duflferin in Egypt. Defended prisoners before Alexandria Court Martial.
Joined staflf of Standard, 1883. Resided as its correspondent in Egypt, Roumania, Servia, Bulgaria, Russia, Turkey, and AustriaHungary. As war correspondent during Dongola campaign, and Cretan insurrection, now correspondent in Paris.
