Barabasti or Barah Basti is a group of 12 villages lying in Bulandshahr district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Pathans who predominantly are residing there belong to the "Daudzai" the Pashtun tribe. Barabasti was established by Isa Khan during the regime of Sher Shah Suri (1472–1545).These are the villages of Pathans who migrated from Afghanistan in the far northwest of the country.

He was the General Secretary, Aligarh Muslim University Students" Union from 1971 to 1972 and its President from 1972 to 1973. Khan joined the Indian National Congress party and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 from Kanpur and 1984 from Bahraich.
Khan joined the Janata Dal and was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989. During the Janta Dal rule Khan served union Minister of Civil aviation and Energy.
He left the Janata Dal to join the Bahujan Samaj Party and again entered the Lok Sabha in 1998.
Khan held ministerial responsibilities from 1984 to 1990. In 2004, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and later unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election as a BJP candidate from Kaisarganj constituency. Khan quit the BJP in 2007 because he was "being ignored in the party".
Khan has been deeply involved in writing since his student days.
Arif Mohammad Khan started his political career as student leader. He contested the first legislative assembly election from Siyana constituency of Bulandshahar on BKD party"s banner but defeated.
