Became a locksmith’s apprentice. Moved to Moscow in 1918. In 1922, worked as a retoucher in a portrait photographer’s studio.
Learnt there the basics of photography. Became a photo-journalist. Worked as a photographer for Rabochaia Gazeta, the largest circulation daily.
From 1924, worked for the weekly illustrated magazine Ogonek. His photographs were included in the exhibition of 78 photographs of achievements which toured to Berlin, Vienna and Prague. Took part in a series of USSR in Construction and Nashi Dostizheniia (Our Achievements).
