After graduate Gorlovka Mining College worked as head miner. 1897-1902 in Paris, studying at mining institute Became acquainted with Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party officials in emigration.
1902 returned to Russia. 1903 joined Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party and conducted agitation and propaganda in Mariupol’ and Odessa. 1907-1914 abandoned party work.
1914-1920 sided with Mensheviks. 1920 joined Bolsheviks. 1902 translated and published text of ’’The Internationale,” which became the Soviet national anthem after October Revol and from 1943 (with the adoption of a new national anthem) became the anthem of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
