The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. During his career he flew 700+ missions. Armin Thiede was killed on 9 July 1943 when a glide transport that he was a passenger in crashed near Ostrice, Croatia.
