De Sales received numerous honours for his public service including being made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire), a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (Commander of the Order of the British Empire), a Grand Cross of the Portuguese Order of Prince Henry (GCIH, in 1999) and being awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM) in 1998.
He was also a member of the Hong Kong Basic Law Consultative Committee. A Hong Kong-based businessman of Portuguese descent, de Sales was a prominent figure in public life in Hong Kong for many years, both as an appointed member of the Urban Council from 1 April 1957, and its chairman for many years from 1 April 1973, and as president of the Olympic Committee of Hong Kong and head of other sports organisations in the territory. A former president of the Club Lusitano de Hong Kong, he continues to be an important member of the Portuguese-descent community of Hong Kong.
