He has given speeches and served on panels at numerous universities and museums and has been honored with grants and awards for his writing.
Bernstein was motivated to write about Jewish history after a group of neo-fascists threatened to march in his largely Jewish neighborhood while he was in high school. 2010 Michigan Notable Book Honors for Bath Massacre: America"s First School Bombing.
This event influenced the author to write Swastika Nation, which deals with American Nazism.
