Prior to his election, Chan worked as a lawyer and, for a time, as an aide to the current Minister of Immigration, Citizenship and International Trade Michael Chan and the former Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. On January 22, 2015 it was revealed to the public that Chan was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer and would be taking a leave of absence from Parliament while undergoing treatment.
Chan is a member of the Liberal Party of Canada.
