(Palmer's first instructional video series for golfers. Th...)
Palmer's first instructional video series for golfers. The volume focuses on the basic mechanics of the game, such as the golfer's grip, swing, and stance.
Arnold Palmer was an American professional golfer. Amateur of an unorthodox swing and aggressive approach in the game, he dominated it from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. During his professional career, he amassed 92 victories in tournaments, including 62 on the Professional Golfers' Association Tour. The first four-time winner of the Masters Tournament, Palmer became a true star of the sport's television era, started in the 1950s.
Background
Arnold Daniel Palmer was born on September 10, 1929 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, United States. He was the first-born of four children in a family of Milfred Jerome Palmer, the greenskeeper and teaching professional at the Latrobe Country Club, and Doris Palmer.
Education
A son of a greenskeeper and teaching professional at the Latrobe Country Club, in an industrial town nearby Pittsburgh, Arnold Palmer was introduced to golf at an early age. It was his father who taught him the fundamental basis of the game and provided his son with his first sports equipment, a set of golf clubs, at the age of three.
Palmer was allowed to hone his skills on the Latrobe course, and soon revealed a big talent for the game. As time went on, the boy developed a distinctive approach to play, consisting of an unusual swing and an awkward, fundamentally flawed hack, which would become his trademark for his entire career. By the age of eight, Palmer easily defeated older competitors, caddies at the course, and became caddie himself at the age of 11.
The first victories in tournaments came while Arnold studied at the Latrobe High School. He lost only one match in four years at the institution. He also added three victorious Western Pennsylvania Junior championships and three Western Pennsylvania Amateur titles to his high school sports accomplishments.
In his senior year, Palmer got acquainted with Bud Worsham, whose brother Lew was a professional golfer. Following Worsham's advice, Palmer accepted a golf scholarship to Wake Forest College (present-day Wake Forest University), North Carolina, in 1947. He quickly became the leader in the college's golf team, winning every amateur and intercollegiate tournament.
Deeply depressed by Worsham's death in a car accident, Palmer forsake college and joined the Coast Guard in Cleveland in 1950. Three years later, he came back to his studies with a strong intention to earn his degree. He never completed it anyway, but was later given an honorary doctorate in the humanities.
While still in Cleveland, Palmer revived his interest in golf and began to take part in amateur tournaments. To support his participation, he began selling painting supplies for a local company. The second consecutive victory in the Ohio Amateur tournaments in 1954 combined with the win at the U.S. Amateur championship in Detroit pushed him to think about turning professional and make golf a job rather than an expensive and time-consuming hobby. It was a hard decision to take as professional golf at the time didn't ensure sufficient financial stability.
The start of Arnold Palmer's sports career can be counted from 1954 when he made a decision to turn professional. The first professional victory at the next year Canadian Open with $2,400 as the top prize was followed by the debut triumph at the Masters Tournament in 1958, held in Augusta, Georgia, which placed him first on the official earnings list for the PGA Tour.
Two years later, he emerged as a sports superstar, winning eight tournaments, often in dramatic fashion. At the Masters, he birdied the last two holes to win by a single stroke, and at the U.S. Open, he entered the final round in 15th place but birdied six of the first seven holes on the way to victory. Palmer's fans began calling themselves "Arnie's Army," a nickname that came about when Palmer played in a tournament near Fort Gordon.
Palmer's accomplishments in golf continued to capture the hearts of Americans over the next few years. 1961 was marked by six victories, including a win at the British Open, repeated the next year with a four-round total of 276 that surpassed the previous record by two strokes. The third Masters championship was added to his collection of victories as well. Palmer went on to win some of the regular tournaments on tour, including the fourth Masters with again a four-round total of 276, the second-lowest score in the Masters up to that time. It turned to be his last victory at a major event.
Arnold Palmer won four Vardon Trophies for the lowest scoring average (1961, 1962, 1964, and 1967), and he was a member of six Ryder Cup teams (1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1971, and 1973). Palmer joined the Senior PGA Tour (later renamed the PGA Tour Champions) on its founding in 1980. Ten victories were to his credit on the tour, including five senior majors. Palmer announced his retirement from competitive golf in 2006, two years after his last appearance at the Masters Tournament.
Palmer got involved in sport business while still competing. He founded Arnold Palmer Enterprises in 1960 and presided over it for some time. He started opening golf courses around the country and established a car dealership as well. In 1971, Palmer bought the Latrobe Country Club, the former workplace of his father, and remained its owner till the end of his days. A year later, along with Ed Seay, he founded a golf-course-design company, Palmer Course Design, later renamed Arnold Palmer Design Company.
Even after Palmer stopped winning tournaments, he remained an important figure for sports marketing workers. As a national advertising spokesman, he collaborated with Wilson Sporting Goods and sport agent Mark McCormack, among others. From 2007 until the end of his life, Palmer was an honorary starter for the Masters. He also took part in Joe Gibb's Golf Channel.
World-famous golf sportsman, Palmer penned a number of books, including autobiographical volumes and several golf guides. He also authored Britannica's entry on the Masters Tournament.
Arnold Palmer went down in the history of the game not only as a great player and one of its most charismatic representatives, but as the game's great ambassador who, according to many, contributed to the transformation of the game from the pastime of upper classes to a spectator sport for the common man, and made it a game that all sorts and kinds could play and enjoy.
Though perceived by many more as a celebrity than a great golfer, he actually had fantastic performances on the course and earned 62 PGA Tour titles from 1955 to 1973. He received almost every national award in golf, including the PGA Tour Player of the Year Award, the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award, the Hickock Athlete of the Year and Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year trophies, to name but a few.
Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974, he is also a charter member of the American Golf Hall of Fame and the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame. Palmer was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, being the first golfer to receive such an honor. Five years later, the second golfer, after Byron Nelson, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

Politics
Arnold was politically conservative. He was a Republican and donated money to Pat Toomey, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and George W. Bush. He was even offered by the Republican Party to run for political office, but declined on each occasion.
Views
Arnold Palmer played a crucial role in the fund-raising drive for the construction of the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women in Orlando. A long-time member of the Board of Directors of Latrobe Area Hospital, he established an annual fund-raising golf event for the institution in 1992. After a successful prostate cancer surgery five years later, he became a strong advocate of programs supporting cancer research and early detection.
Quotations:
"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented."
"What other people find in poetry, I find in the flight of a good drive."
"You must play boldly to win."
"I've always made a total effort, even when the odds seemed entirely against me. I never quit trying; I never felt that I didn't have a chance to win."
"The more I practice the luckier I get."
"Success in golf depends less on strength of body than upon strength of mind and character."
"The road to success is always under construction."
"Concentration comes out of a combination of confidence and hunger."
"What do I mean by concentration? I mean focusing totally on the business at hand and commanding your body to do exactly what you want it to do."
"I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone's golf game: it's called an eraser."
"Making a positive change in the life of a child is one of the most significant things you can do."
"The most rewarding things you do in life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done."
Membership
Arnold Palmer was chairman of the United States Golf Association Member Program and served as Honorary National Chairman of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation for 20 years.
In addition, Palmer was a member of the Freemasons from 1958.

Quotes from others about the person
Gene Littler, professional golfer: "That's Arnold Palmer. He's going to be a great player someday. When he hits the ball, the earth shakes."
Vin Scully, former sportscaster: "In a sport that was high society, he made it 'High Noon.'"
Jack Nicklaus, former professional golfer: "Arnold is the reason golf enjoys the popularity it does today. He [...] made golf attractive to the television-viewing public. There never has been anyone like him before in the game of golf, and there probably won't be another like him again."
James Dodson, sportswriter: "We loved him with a mythic American joy... He represented everything that is great about golf. The friendship, the fellowship, the laughter, the impossibility of golf, the sudden rapture moment that brings you back, a moment that you never forget, that's Arnold Palmer in spades. He's the defining figure in golf."
Golfweek magazine: "As a measure of his popularity, Palmer, like Elvis Presley before him, was known simply as "The King." But in a life bursting from the seams with success, Palmer never lost his common touch. He was a man of the people, willing to sign every autograph, shake every hand, and tried to look every person in his gallery in the eye."
Adam Schupak, Golfweek senior writer: "No one did more to popularize the sport than Palmer. His dashing presence singlehandedly took golf out of the country clubs and into the mainstream. Quite simply, he made golf cool."
