Arnold Versteeg is a Dutch lawyer based in Amsterdam. He was admitted to the Amsterdam bar in 1986, became a partner at the law firm Stibbe, and later co-founded the firms Brinkhof and Macro & Versteeg Advocaten. His practice centers on the regulated healthcare market, including medicines, medical devices and health insurance, as well as procurement and competition law.
Background
Arnold Versteeg was born in 1959. His university studies took place in Nijmegen, a city in the eastern Netherlands that is often described as the oldest city in the country.
Nijmegen was chosen as the site of a Catholic university in 1923, at a time when Roman Catholics in the Netherlands held few senior government posts and the Catholic community wanted an institution of its own. The city was selected after competition among several other cities.
Education
Versteeg studied at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, known today as Radboud University Nijmegen, and completed his studies there in 1982. He then spent three years as an academic staff member at the university and defended his dissertation there in 1987.
The Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen was established on 17 October 1923 and was the first Roman Catholic university in the Netherlands. It began with three faculties, and a faculty of law was among those planned from the outset. The university adopted the name Radboud University Nijmegen in 2004.
Career
After completing his studies, Versteeg worked for three years as an academic staff member at Nijmegen University, and in 1987 he defended his dissertation there. This academic period preceded his career in legal practice in Amsterdam.
Versteeg was admitted to the bar in Amsterdam in January 1986 and joined Stibbe, where he later became a partner. Stibbe traces its origins to 1911, when David Stibbe founded a law practice on the Herengracht in Amsterdam. In 1991 the Amsterdam firm Stibbe, Blaisse & De Jong merged with the Brussels firm Simont & Simont. Versteeg remained with Stibbe until 2005, latterly as a partner (compagnon).
In 2004 Versteeg was among the founders of Brinkhof, a specialized Amsterdam law practice. In 2013 he co-founded Macro & Versteeg Advocaten with Alison Macro. The firm operates as a partnership focused on regulated markets, and it currently has two lawyers.
Versteeg's practice centers on the regulated healthcare market, including the regulation of medicines, medical devices and self-care products, and the financing of health insurance. The market for access and pricing is overseen by the Dutch health ministry and the Netherlands Authority for Healthcare. He also advises on procurement law, sector-specific competition law, contract law and government liability, and he litigates in both administrative and civil proceedings.
Versteeg also held an earlier position at De Nederlandsche Bank, the Dutch central bank established in 1814 and headquartered in Amsterdam.
Versteeg's principal documented professional partnership is with Alison Macro, with whom he founded Macro & Versteeg Advocaten in Amsterdam in 2013.
