1905 participated in students’movement. After graduate stayed at university to train for professorship. 1911 resigned from university in protest against the policy of Minister of Education Kasso.
After 1917 October Revol professor of criminal law, Moscow University. 1945 Soviet representative at London Four-Power Conference (Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics, United States of America, United Kingdom and France) which established the statutes of the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal. Soviet prosecution consultant at Nuremberg Trials.
1947 and 1948 elected vice-president, International Association of Democratic Lawyers.
Correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1946.
