A surgeon who practiced at Mt. Sinai in the late 1890s and early 1900s, Dr. Arpad Gerster was also a sportsman, a linguist, and an artist. His vivid, humorous observations of nature and people, his delight in the outdoors, and his drawings and etchings offer a portrait of the Adirondacks in the late 19th century. This volume is a continuation of Notes Collected in the Adirondacks 1895 and 1896, the Fishing and Hunting Diary with Insights of a Physician, Scholar, and Humanist, acclaimed by Bill McKibben, Nelson Bryant, and Nick Lyons, among others. A surgeon who practiced at Mt. Sinai in NYC in the late 1890s and early 1900s, Dr. Arpad Gerster, Hungarian by birth, was also a sportsman, linguist, and an artist. Both diaries chronicle his visits to the Adirondacks, where he had camps at Raquette Lake and later Long Lake. His vivid, often humorous observations of nature and people, his delight in the outdoors, and his drawings and etchings, are a larger portrait of a region in the age of William West Durant , great camps, railroads, and the beginnings of conservation. Illustrated with Gerster's work and maps of the region in the 1890s, this volume also contains an interview with Dr. John C. A. Gerster, Dr. Arpad Gerster's son, and a detailed index covering both volumes.

Arpad Geyza Charles Gerster was born on December 22, 1848, at Kassa, once in Hungary but now in Czechoslovakia. He was the son of Nicholas Gerster - descendant of Swiss settlers - and Caroline Schmidt Sandy, and the brother of the prima donna Etelka Gerster.
Gerster was educated in public and private schools of his native town and did not have a classical training, a deficiency which he largely overcame in later years by private study. He took a degree in medicine from the University of Vienna in 1872.
Gerster was about to settle in Kassa when he was called to the colors as an army surgeon. When he was finally placed on the reserve list he was appointed pathologist at the Kassa City Hospital.
Since he had an uncle in Brooklyn, New York, and had read much about America, he conceived the idea of settling in the United States, which notion was regarded by all his friends and associates as incomparably foolish.
He arrived in New York on March 9, 1873, having made the acquaintance on the boat of his future wife, Anna Barnard Wynne of Cincinnati. For the first few years, he was engaged in general practise in Brooklyn.
The new antiseptic technique which was gradually being adopted tended to make specialization practicable if not almost necessary, however, and after removing from Brooklyn to New York Gerster practised surgery exclusively.
He received in 1878 the appointment of attending surgeon to the German (later Lenox Hill) Hospital and two years later, a like appointment to the Mount Sinai Hospital, being one of the few Gentiles to be thus honored.
In 1882, with John A. Wyeth, he was made surgeon to and professor of surgery in the new New York Polyclinic, retaining this chair until 1894. Having espoused the new technique inaugurated by Lord Lister, he became distinguished as a teacher; among his pupils were William J. and Charles Mayo.
In 1902, he refused a tentative offer of the chair of surgery in the University of Budapest. He served as president of the American Surgical Association in 1911-12, and in 1916, he was appointed professor of clinical surgery at Columbia University.
His medical writings, with the exception of his text-book, were limited to clinical and historical papers. In 1917, he published his much-read autobiography, Recollections of a New York Surgeon.
Gerster was the first in America to publish a text-book on the new surgery, Rules of Aseptic and Antiseptic Surgery (1888). Not only was it revolutionary in content, but the mechanical work was ultramodern; it contained some of the earliest of half-tone pictures, made from the author’s own plates. This epoch-making book went through three editions in two years, and was then allowed to lapse because the author believed that it had done its work.

As a practitioner, Gerster was described as a physician first and surgeon next, which means that he was a superior diagnostician, that he often declined to operate, and that he excelled on post-operative care.
Dr. Gerster was a man of many interests. He was a naturalist who loved camping and fishing. In 1912, he became a Trustee of the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks. He travelled extensively, including Puerto Rico, Europe, Canada, and the Bahamas. Additionally, he was a lover of music, especially opera. He taught himself Italian in order to better understand it. He was also an avid reader, favoring the Greek and Roman classics. However, Arpad Gerster's most well known diversion was probably his interest and ability in art. He was an accomplished sketch artist and etcher.
In 1875, Gerster married Anna Barnard Wynne Gerster.
