(Excerpt from The Talmud It is the model of a superficial...)
Excerpt from The Talmud It is the model of a superficial, popular, enjoyable exposition. Deutsch's article created a sensation in England, and was translated in France. Coming after it, Arsene's, superior though it was, would have appeared to be inspired by it. It therefore remained unpublished despite the efforts later on made by M. Gaston Paris to effect its appearance in the French reviews... Notwithstanding the great and happy changes brought about in France during the last fifteen years in studies of this kind, which have found a centre at the Ecole des Hautes-Etudes and an organ in the Revue des Etudes juives, his article has preserved its originality unimpaired, and even now is unique in our language as a summing up of the vast Talmudic chaos." In a foot-note, the biographer says: "My brother later retouched his article, and introduced the references to Deutsch contained therein." The essay, here translated from the Reliques Scientifiques, finally, in 1889, the year following the death of its author, found its way into the Revue des Etudes juives. Arsène Darmesteter was born on January 5, 1846 at Chateau Salins in Alsace, France.
He studied under Gaston Paris at the École pratique des hautes études, and became professor of Old French language and literature at the Sorbonne.
He taught in the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris, and then in the Sorbonne from 1883 until his death. His law establishes the principle that Latin words of four syllables having an accent on the penult, such as manducare and collocare, are transformed in French as follows: the vowel of the first syllable is treated like that of the third (stressed) syllable, and the vowel of the second syllable is usually treated as if it were in the final syllable. Accordingly, the second and fourth vowels weaken and tend to disappear while the first and the third remain, and manducare and collocare become, quite regularly, manger and coucher. This simple law gives the key to the development of the vowels in all French polysyllables.
