Speaks several languages. Trained as a diplomat. First job was at the Soviet Embassy in Peru.
Turned to journalism. Reporter on the weekly magazine Ogonek. Sent by V. Korotich, the editor-in-chief, to Afghanistan as a war reporter.
Described with frankness the horrors of the war for the Soviet soldiers. Impressed the International Herald Tribune which ran his story. In his interview with the Tribune, he told of his lifestyle, including his grand Moscow flat, fast cars and drugs.
