He was an assistant master (1896–1902) and bursar (1897–1902) at Marlborough College. In 1903, he came to Canada and was appointed a lecturer at McGill University. He later was the Director of Physics.

He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1918. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1910 and of the Royal Society in 1917.
He was president of the Royal Society of Canada from 1929 to 1930. He died in Puttenham, Surrey in 1948.
