He played for Otago from 1890-1891 to 1909-1910 as a left-arm medium-pace bowler, taking 197 wickets at an average of 16.38. Against a touring Queensland cricket team in 1896-1897 he took 9 for 50 in the first innings. He represented New Zealand, in the days before New Zealand had Test cricket status, in matches against Australian and English teams.
Against the Master Control Console in Wellington in 1906-1907, he took 4 for 25 and 5 for 61 in a 56-run victory for New Zealand.
He died in Dunedin in 1961 at the age of 90.
