Arthur Hailey was born on April 5, 1920, in Luton, Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. He was the only child of George Wellington Hailey, a factory worker, and Elsie Wright Hailey.
Arthur Hailey studied at the free high school, showed well. He avidly read and wrote poems, plays, and notes in the local newspaper. His mother, an ambitious woman, wanted her son to reach a significant position in life. But when he became 14 years, Haley had to quit school because he lost the contest for the only scholarship in high school, and his parents could not afford a paid education.
Arthur Hailey started his career as an office boy in one of the offices, where he worked from 1934 to 1939 in London. In 1937 he took courses at shorthand and typing and raised himself to the clerk. In 1939 he enlisted for service in the Royal Air Force, hoping to become a pilot. Hailey became a pilot and was promoted to the rank of flight lieutenant. In the last two years of World War II, Arthur Hailey served in London as a Staff Officer under the British Ministry of Air Transport.
After the war, in 1947, Haley left military service and moved to Canada - he loved this country when flight training was taking place there. In addition to his main occupation - journalism - Haley began writing scripts for television and play. He also was a sales promotion and advertising manager for Canadian Trailmobile Ltd. from 1953 until 1956. After working at a number of jobs and writing part-time, Arthur Hailey became a full-time writer since 1955, creating a script of the Flight into Danger, which was purchased by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Following the success of his book the Hotel during 1965, he moved to California. In 1969, he moved to the Bahamas to avoid Canadian and United States income taxes, which were claiming 90% of his income.
