Excerpt from Arthur Henry Hallam Gaskell found our Society, if not at the point, yet af?icted with a premonitory lethargy, almost of death; but he breathed life by his assiduity and energy into every artery and vein of the body; and gave to Arthur Hallam a worthy field for the training of his eloquence and the exhibition of his always temperate but yet vivid and enlightened ideas, stamped with traditional Whiggism, yet incapable of being permanently trammelled by any artificial restraint. Arthur Henry Hallam was born on February 1, 1811 in London.
He attended school at Eton, where he met future Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.
Some of his prose and verse, abridged and edited by his father, Henry Hallam the historian, achieved eight editions before 1900.
A restored and complete text was published for the first time in 1943. Hallam's Wordsworthian verse and philosophical and literary prose, while demonstrating critical insight, especially in Dante scholarship, fail to give a lively image of that genius for friendship which stamped his memory hypnotically upon Tennyson, W. E. Gladstone, and others.
