He was educated at Oberlin College and acquired architectural training in offices in Philadelphia and Boston.
At an early age he began his career in Toledo in the office of the late N. B. Bacon, and later from 1894 until shortly before his own death was associated in partnership with Bernhard Becker (d. 1929). In that period he was co-architect of the Newbury School, the Messinger Block, Calvin Building and other public and business structures in Toledo.
