Bateman-Champain was the son of Colonel Sir John Underwood Bateman-Champain, Knight Commander of the Order of Street Michael and Saint George, Revue Economique and Harriet Sophie Currie. He was part of a large cricketing family. Bateman-Champain was educated at Cheltenham College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.
He served in the Indian Army as an officer in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Gurkha Rifles.
In 1905 he was appointed to be in charge of the King"s Indian Orderly Officers. He died in Lansdowne, India, on 7 October 1907.
