Studied at Mornington School, near Bellerive, Clarence.
Member Clarence Municipality, 1890-1892. Member and Chairman First Town Board, Zeehan, West Coast, Tasmania; Chairman, 1892-1894 and 1896-1900, Member to 1902; Chairman Board of Advice, Cemetery Trust, 1892-1902. Member of Licensing Bench, Marine Board of Strahan, Macquarie Harbour, 1898- 1902; minister without portfolio, 1903-1904.
Formed, and was appointed Captain of the Zeehan Rifle Company, 1stiBatt. Tas. Infantry, 1896; served in South African War in command of E. Squadron 3rd Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse, and retired with rank of Major (medal with clasp). Elected by Parliament as a Member of the Council of the University of Tasmania.
Chairman of Committees since 1907. Member of the Legislative Council of Tasmania for Gordon since 1899. Justice of the Peace.
