Studied at Leek Grammar School. Huddersfield College. Apprenticed to Messrs.
Broughs, silk manufacturers, Leek, 1856.
Became a member of the firm, then Brough, Nicholson, and Company, 1868. Still actively engaged in the silk manufacturing business. Is vicepresident of the Textile Institute.
Holds numerous other public offices. Elected, unopposed, as first County Councillor for' Leek, 1SS9. Retired, 1892.
Chairman and trustee of the Leek and Moorlands Building Society, also of the Town Lands Trust.
For many years has been a successful breeder and exhibitor of Shire Horses. Owns Redlynch Forest King and Leek Forest King. Ex-President of the Ashbourne Shire Horse Society, and member of the Council of the Shire Horse Society (Great Britain).
Also breeder and exhibitor of Sheep (Shropshires), and is President of the Staffordshire Agricultural Society. Chairman of the Midland Liberal Federation, and of the North Staffordshire Liberal Federation. Also Taeasurer of the Leek Division Liberal Association, and Treasurer of the Staffordshire Congregational Union.
Travelled on the Continent of Europe, also in Egypt, Canada, and United States of America, etc. Justice of the Peace since 1883, and C.C. since 1904, Staffords; a managing director of Brough, Nicholson and Hall, Ltd., Leek.
