Smith received an Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan in 1924, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School in 1926. He was in private practice in Chicago, Illinois, from 1926 to 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, from 1929 to 1946, and in Dearborn, Michigan, from 1946 to 1959. He was also a lecturer in patent law at the University of Michigan Law School from 1952 to 1959.
In 1957 he authored the frequently cited "Pitfalls in Patent Prosecution" subsequently published in the Journal of the Patent Office Society, volume 41, pgs 5-33 (1959).
He served until his death in 1968.
