Corthell, Arthur Bateman was born on July 3, 1860 in Whitman, Massachusetts, United States. Son of James Hosea and Charlotte (Almy) Corthell.


Educated Providence High School, 1875-1877. Brown U., 1877-1881 (honorary Master of Arts, 1898).


Draftsman with Hereshoff Manufacturing Company, Bristol, Rhode Island, 1878-1881. Rodman, city engineer’s office, Providence, March-June 1881. Again with Hereshoff Manufacturing Company, June-September 1881.

Assistant engineer, supervisor and div. engineer, New York, West Shore & Buffalo R.R., 1881-1884. Civil engineer Knickerbocker Ice Company, New York, 1884-1886. Principal assistant engineer, Fitzgerald & Mallory Construction Company, building railroads for Member of Parliament Railway, in Kansas and Colorado, 1886-1887.
