Burmese War, 18S6-88. Accompanied as Intelligence Officer the Northern Shan Column which in 1887-1888 annexed the CisSalween Shan States.
Special correspondent of the Pioneer and Daily Telegraph with the Afghan Boundary Commission, 1884-1885. Travelled in Persia and the Caucasus in 1881 and 1885, and In Russian Central Asia, 1890.
Fellow" of the Royal Geographical Society and Honorary Corresponding Member of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society since 1890.
Member and gold medallist of the United Service Institution of India, 1886. Member of and lecturer at the Royal United Service Institution, 1899- 1900. Commandant of the 129th (Duke of Connaught’s Own) Baluchis, 1903-1905.
