Davis, Arthur Cayley was born on March 14, 1893 in Columbia, South Carolina, United States. Son of Ellery William and Annie (Wright) Davis.


Student of University Nebraska, 1909-111. Bachelor of Science, United States Naval Academy, 1915. Student Naval Postgraduate School, 1920.

Master of Arts, University of Chicago, 1922.


Commissioned ensign United States Navy, 1915, advanced through grades to vice admiral, 1951. Special qualifications in mathematics, gunnery and aviation ordnance. Naval aviator since 1923.

Aircraft carrier commander, 1939, 42 (United States Ship Enterprise), chief of staff 5th Fleet, 1944-1945. Commander Carrier Task Force, 1945. Deputy assistant secretary defense for Internal Security Affairs, 1952-1955, retired as admiral, 1955.
