Served Ashanti War, 1873 (medal with clasp).
Soudan, 1885 (medal with clasp, Khedive’s star). Burmah, 1887-1888 (medal with clasp).
Soudan, 1888-1889, including action of Gemaizah (clasp). Commanded 1st Scots Guards, South Africa, until promoted.
Commanded 20th Brigade (despatches, medal, 6 clasps).
Commanded 1st Division. 1st Army Corps, 1902-1906. Holds Order of the Red Eagle (first class), Grand Cross of the Dannebrog, Legion of Honour (Grand Officer).
