Analysis of Manures. Before beginning the several operations and analysis which follow, the directions given should be carefully read over, in order that a clear idea of the whole plan to be pursued may be first obtained. Bone-dust, Bone-shavings, Boiled Bones, Etc. These, and all other forms of unburnt bones, consist of calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, carbonaceous and nitrogenous matters commonly called organic matter, moisture, with sandy impurities and minute quantities of other substances. The analysis for commercial purposes may be conducted as follows. Too much care cannot be exercised in order to secure a fair average sample of the manure. They consist chiefly of cellulose, and may be detected by their microscopic structure or by the action of H2S04 of sp. gr. 1-53, which dissolves them without blackening, and forms a solution which, on warming, diluting with water, and addition of ammonia, gives no precipitate. Bone-black, Animal Charcoal, &c. Partially burnt bones are to be analysed in the same way as fresh bone. They often contain a mere trace only of nitrogen. If it be required to determine the carbon present, this may be done by digesting 3 grams of the substance with dilute hydrochloric acid and collecting the residual sand and carbon on a tared filter, and weighing it after drying at 100 C. The carbon and filter-paper may then be burnt away in a crucible. The loss will represent the carbon and filter. Bone-ash. The organic matter, being very small in amount, may be neglected, and the whole volatile matter estimated together by carefully heating to low redness some of the finely powdered sample; this should be done in a covered crucible, as decrepitation is apt to occur. The analysis is in other respects conducted as with bone-dust. Not more than 1 gram (or 16 grs.) should be taken for analysis. A nitrogen combustion is unnecessary. Apatite, and its numerous varieties, known as phosphorite, osteolite, staffellite, &c., contains a very large proportion of calcium phosphate associated with calcium chloride or fluoride, and minute quantities of moisture, oxide of iron and alumina, insoluble matter (which, in the case of some apatites, is partly a cerium phosphate called cryplolite), and occasionally calcium carbonate. In preparing the following pages for the press, I have to acknowledge, as on previous occasions, the help of several friends and correspondents. A mongst these I specially name Mr. J. Of recent years the literature dealing with the subjects to which the present handbook is devoted has greatly increased. Several of the volumes named in my Bibliographical Notes are of sterling merit and contain original material of no little importance. But I am bound to confess that I have met with several disappointments when searching for records of new facts in recent dictionary articles, reports of lectures, and treatises. On perusal a familiar note seemed sometimes to be struck; and I ultimately identified not a little of the material as my own. I will not dwell on this matter; it is indeed some consolation to feel that such transferences from my pages would not have taken place had not the paragraphs and tables and comments been deemed of some value. This handbook first appeared in the spring of 1890; two years afterwards a second and revised edition was published. The work having now been long out of print and a considerable amount of fresh material having accumulatedi I felt that the time for a corrected issue had arrived. The plan of the book has not been altered, yet scarcely a page remains without change or addition. The bibliography has been augmented, while as to the body of the text, important corrections have been made or paragraphs introduced in the accounts given of paper, plaster, oil in paints, resins, solvents, classification of pigments, and triab of pigments. Several new pigments or new varieties of old pigments are mentioned and described; some old pictures and drawings not previously noticed in my chapter on this subject are critically examined for the first time. The last six pages Of the former editions of the present work were occupied with a digest of an important newspaper discussion on the effect of light upon water-colour drawings. He was Professor of Chemistry at the Agricultural College, Cirencester from 1863 to 1879 and Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1879 to 1911. He wrote on organic, physiological and mineralogical chemistry. He was invested Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1909.
He was a talented painter and thus became an expert of chemistry of paintings and frescoes.
He was a fellow of the Royal Society (elected 1888),a fellow of King"s College London, president of the Mineralogical Society, and a fellow of the Chemical Society. The New York Times called him a "famous chemist" and "a leading authority in the chemistry of painting".
He died at Shelsley, Kew Gardens in 1915, and is buried in Richmond Cemetery.
