Beginning his work with a post-World War II overview of American society in general, of mainline Protestant churches, and of higher education, Arthur De Jong shows how church-related colleges came to adopt a public-university educational philosophy--a direction that the author critically analyzes. De Jong proceeds to outline a new raison d'etre for the church-related college by pointing it back to basic Christian tenets and toward a new, post-modern science paradigm and a more interconnected worldview. Having diagnosed the status quo and having put forth a new direction and identity for church-related colleges, De Jong suggest ways in which these schools can build their programs according to the principles he has posited.
