EVANS, Arthur John was born in 1851 in Nash Mills, Hertfordshire. Son of late Sir John Evans, Knight Commander of the Bath.
Harrow; Brasenose College Oxford. Gottingen. First class Modern History. Doctor of Literature.
Doctor of Laws Edinburgh. Master of Arts.
Travelled in Finland and Russian Lapland, 1873, 1874. And in the Balkan countries, 1875 onwards, making Ragusa headquarters for archaeological and ethnographical researches. In 1882 imprisoned by Austrian Government on a charge of complicity in Crivoscian Insurrection in S. Dalmatia.
In 1884 made Keeper of the Ashrnolean Museum in the University of Oxford, and has superintended its reorganisation. From 1893 onwards Archaeological investigations in Crete resulting in discovery of prae-Phoenician Script. 1900 - 190S excavated the prehistoric Palace of Knossos.
Keeper of Ashrnolean Museum, 1884-1908. Honourable Keeper since 1908, Extraordinary Professor of Prehistoric Archeology. Societies, Antiquaries, Hellenic, Numismatic, etc.
