Studied at Chudleigh Grammar School. Royal Naval Academy, Gosport.
Entered Royal Navy 1858. Sub-lieut. on board H. Master of Surgery “Bombay,” in December 1864, when that ship 1609 was destroyed by fire off the mouth of the Rio i de la Plata, on which occasion 92 officers and men perished. Served in Abyssinian Expedition, mentioned in despatches.
And also noted for services in connection with the suppression of the slave trade on the East Coast of Africa. Member of Parliament (Conservative) Torquay Div. Devon, 1895-1900. Justice of the Peace; Captain Royal Navy (retired).
