Studied at Polytechnic School, Stuttgart, Germany. Silver medal for higher mathematics. Holds an Extra Master’s certificate from the Board of Trade.
Served in late Indian Navy from 1849 to its abolition in 1862, as Midshipman and Lieutenant. Was present as Lieut, of a steam frigate in 1856-1857 at the capture of Bushire and Mahommera in the Persian War, and received a medal, but chiefly employed on hydrographic surveys. Engineer-in-chief and afterwards also Electrician for the Indian Government telegraph cables in the Persian Gulf, 1864-1879.
Port Officer and Master Attendant of Calcutta until 1888, when he retired under the age limit. Served an apprenticeship, 1860-1863, while on furlough, to the late James Abernethy, President Institute of Commander of Order of Leopold. In 1890 was Engineer-in-chief of the HalifaxBermudas cable expedition, and successfully 1929 laid that cable. Royal Indian Marine; retired on pension; a younger brother of the Trinity House; for many years Association.I.C.E., M.Inst.E.E., and F. Royal Astronomical or Asiatic Society.
Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Fellow of the Geological Society. Clubs: East India United Service.
Spouse 1863, Henrietta,daughter of John Stone, J.P., D.L. for Bucks. Two sons, one daughter.
