Joined the Bolshevik Party, 1920. Sent to Spain as an NKVD officer during the Spanish Civil War. During World War II, head of a special school for intelligence agents, and of the HQ of communist partisans in Latvia.
In charge of the communist underground in Latvia and Belorussia, 1943-1944.
