Arvind Krishna Mehrotra was born on April 16, 1947 in Lahore, Pakistan.
Arvind received from the University of Allahabad his B.A. in 1966. Later, in 1968, he obtained from the University of Bombay his M.A. in 1968.
Arvind was an editor at damn youla magazine of the arts in Allahabad between 1965 and 1968. He founded Ezra-Fakir Press, Bombay in 1966. He worked as a lecturer in English at the University of Allahabad in 1968-1977, later became a reader in English since 1978. From 1971 to 1973 he worked at the University of Iowa, Iowa City as a visiting writer. Mehrotra worked at the University of Hyderabad, India as a lecturer in English from 1977 to 1978.
Arvind married Vandana Jain in 1969 and has a son.
