Taylor joined the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. Following the war he would be assigned to the 15th Infantry Regiment. Later he would be assigned to the artillery.
He was a veteran of both the Civil War and the Spanish–American War.
