Townsend moved from his native England to the United States in 2003 to play college soccer at the University of the Cumberlands, where he was recognized by the Mid-South Conference all four years as a member of the All-Conference Team.

Professional
Townsend began his professional career in 2007 when he signed for the Cincinnati Kings of the USL Second Division, and made his professional debut on 21 April 2007 in Cincinnati"s 2–0 opening day loss to the Richmond Kickers. He went on to make 19 appearances for the Kings in his debut season. Following Cincinnati"s relegation to the USL Premier Development League, Townsend moved to Wilmington Hammerheads in 2008, and moved to the Real Maryland Monarchs in 2009.
In 2013, Townsend joined Sollefteå GIF, but left the Swedish club before the start of the season.
