Gaikwad is the President of the Republican Party of India (RPI). Gaikwad is from Satara, Maharashtra, India. Ashok Gaikwad participated in 2014 lok sabha election from Satara lok sabha constituency as a representative of Mahayuti (Alliance of BJP, Shivsena and Republican Party of India).
In Maharashtra only 1 lok sabha ticket was allocated to Republican Party of India by Mahayuti and this opportunity was given to Ashok Gaikwad because of his long association and contribution to dalit moment.
Ashok Gaikwad was contesting against chatrapati udhyanraje bhosale the premier candidate of NCP. Ashok Gaikwad lost the election with huge margin and Chatrapati Udhyanraje Bhosale was chosen as Member of Parliament of Satara lok sabha whereas throughout Maharashtra the picture was different for Mahayuti candidates. Ashok Gaikwads defeat in loksabha was due to non polarization between the supporting parties and independent candidate given by Shiv sena.
Few of the dalit speaker said that the defeat was due to caste politics. Ashok Gaikwad is still considered as a dominating and favourite dalit leader among the masses of Satara and will play and important role in 2014 states election of Maharashtra.
