Auguste Herbin was born on April 29, 1882 in Quiévy, France. His father was a craftsman.
Since 1899 to 1901, Herbin studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille.
In 1907, Herbin exhibited at the Salon d'Automne. After his move to the Bateau-Lavoir studios in 1909, Auguste started to experiment with Cubism. In 1914, at the outbreak of World War I, he was exempted from military service because of his short stature and was committed to work in an airplane factory near Paris. After the First World War, Herbin exhibited regularly at Léonce Rosenberg’s Galerie de l’Effort Moderne and started on a series of painted wooden reliefs.
In 1917, the painter moved on to an abstract, geometric phase before gradually discovering Constructivism. In 1922, the painter briefly returned to figurative painting.
During the 1930s, he served as a publisher and author for the journal "Abstraction-Creation. Art non figurativ".
Since 1938, his interest in the Italian Trecento led Herbin to a more concrete, strictly two-dimensional painting style with simple geometric forms.
In 1946, Auguste developed the "Alphabet plastique", a compositional system, based on the structure of letters. He published this compositional system as well as his colour theories, partly derived from Goethe's "Farbenlehre", in his "L'art non-figuratif non-objectif" in 1949.
A lateral paralysis in 1953 forced the painter to learn to paint with his left hand. He continued working until his death in 1960.
Herbin was a co-founder of Abstraction-Création Association in 1931 and a vice president of Salon des Réalites Nouvelles.
His works are kept at numerous museums and galleries, including the Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle, Netherlands, National Galleries of Scotland, Matisse Museum in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France and others.
