He was a graduate of the Polytechnic School at Darmstadt, and well trained for a professional career.
Following his arrival in New York (1851), the young man sought employment as architectural draftsman and worked first in the office of Jonathan Snook. Afterwards he was associated with Carstensen & Gilde¬meister, architects of the famous Crystal Palace, and remained with the firm until the completion of the building in 1853. Later in the same year Mr. Bauer moved to Chicago and began practice in a partnership with Asher Carter (the second professional architect to establish an office in the city).
Leaving Carter in 1866, he was associated briefly with Architect Lebonitz; and between 1871 and 1881 practiced alone. Finally from 1881 until his IJ c was a member of the firm of Bauer & Hill, in partnership with Henry W. Hill. During his years in Chicago Mr. Bauer carried on an extensive practice engaged particularly in planning business and commercial structures, most of which have long since been demolished. In addition to his architectural work, he served on the Chicago Board of Education for a number of years after 1874, and many of the city schools were designed by him.
He was married in 1861 to Anna Apfel. They had five children: Max, Herman, Robert, Clara, and Hertha.
