Brigadier general vols., December 18, 1863. Bvtd. major general vols., June 18, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services during the war. Mustered out, January 15, 1866.

Assistant United States collector internal revenue, Utah, 1867-1869. United States consul general, Brussels, 1869-1872. Member of the board of education, Chicago, 1876-1877.

Organized Home National Bank, Chicago, 1872, and was its president. Organized Industrial Bank of Chicago, 1891, and elected its president. Retired. Author: Recollections of Seventy Years, 1898.
