(Saint Ambrose was born in France to wealthy Roman parents...)
Saint Ambrose was born in France to wealthy Roman parents in 340 AD. When he was mature, and his father had passed away, he moved to Rome, where he finished his education, and became a governor. While still a catechumen (an unbaptized Christian), the bishop of Milan died, and he was chosen for the position. At the order of the emperor he was baptized and appointed as the new bishop, the office he would hold until his death. Once he became a bishop, he gave away all his wealth and property for church use and to help the poor. He then took on a strict ascetic life and devoted himself to his work. St. Ambrose's preaching quickly became famous and he attracted many people to his church. He is well-known for his writings in which he both explains and defends the true character of the Christian faith. He also wrote on the moral and education requirements of priests. THE translation of the two treatises contained in the present volume was undertaken by the Rev. T. Thompson at the request of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, and was in preparation at the time of his death in the spring of 1917. Mr. Thompson had for some years contemplated the preparation of an edition of the original text of the treatise On the Sacraments, and had dealt with some of the liturgical problems involved in both treatises in his valuable little book On the Offices of Baptism and Confirmation, in the Cambridge Handbooks of Liturgical Study. To that book the present editor has made constant reference in preparing the Introduction and Notes.

Saint Ambrose was born, probably at Trier, Germany, in a. d. 333. He was the son of Ambrose, a Christian and praetorian prefect of Gaul.
After his father's death, Ambrose completed at Rome a sound literary education, studied law, practiced for a time, and about 370 began an administrative career.
In 373 he became governor of Liguria and Emilia, residing at Milan. Acclaimed bishop by the people, whose choice was approved by bishops and emperor, he was baptized, and eight days later, Dec. 7, 374, he was consecrated. He devoted himself eagerly to the study of theology, especially of the Greek Fathers, gave his wealth to the poor, and placed himself at the service of all. His suave and practical oratory converted, among others, St. Augustine. The political influence of Ambrose was important. The character of the youthful emperor Gratian (r. 375-383), who came from Trier to Milan, was strengthened by Ambrose's counsels, and Ambrose's hand was seen in legislative measures which facilitated the expansion of Christianity. The attempts (385-386) of the Arian protégés of the regent Justina to secure churches in Milan were frustrated by the popularity of Ambrose. He undertook successfully two diplomatic missions to the usurper Maximus in 383 and 387 on behalf of Justina's son, the emperor Valentinian II, who, after his reinstatement (388), found in Ambrose a paternal adviser. With the principles of Ambrose, that the Church is independent of the state in its own sphere, that it is the custodian of the moral law, and that it has the right to protection by the state, the emperor Theodosius (reigned 379-395) was in agreement. Ambrose died at Milan, Apr. 4, 397. His feast is December 7. Ambrose's dogmatic works, traditional rather than original, consist of three treatises against the Arians, 378-382, one for catechumens (De mysteriis, 387), and one against the Novatians (De paenitentia, c. 384). His real doctrinal eminence is seen in his moral and ascetic writings, which include the De officiis ministrorum ("Duties of Clerics, " c. 391), based on Cicero's De officiis, and five treatises on continence, among them the De virginibus (a panegyric on virginity, 377).
