An outspoken crusader for the unique significance of the Olympic Games, Brundage has been called “a high priest at the altar of Olympism.” An opponent of professional athletes in the Olympics and pioneer in gender verification in sports, Brundage has been criticized for controversial decisions and statements relating to women and Jews in sports, primarily made during his earlier tenure as president of the United States Olympic Committee during the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. He is likely best remembered for his insistence that the Games of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich continue following the terrorist massacre of Israeli athletes there - a decision for which he was both praised and criticized.
