Background
Merican is the son of Mahmood Osman Merican and Ragayah Eusoff.

Merican attended Sevenoaks School from 1986 to 1987. Five years later he earned his Bachelor of Medicine degree from the University of Southampton. In 1999, Azhar was given a Master of Science degree in Orthopaedics Surgery from the University of Malaya.
Also in 2010, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Imperial College of London, where he studied the patellofemoral joint and the role of soft tissues in patellar tracking and stability.
Merican began his career as a resident of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the University of Malaya Medical Center in 1993. Six years later he took a position of a clinical specialist and an associate professor of the Joint Reconstruction Division in 2007 at the same center and held it until 2011.
Also in 2002, he served at Dorr Arthritis Institute. Since 2011 Azhar has been a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and head of the Division of Joint Reconstruction at the University of Malaya Medical Center.
Merican has received the Academic Training Scheme, a Scholarship Award by the University of Malaya, the Federal Scholarship For British Top Universities by the Malaysian Government and The University of Malaya Award For Excellence for being the Doctor of Philosophy candidate with the highest cumulative impact factor by the University of Malaya.
Merican is a member of Malaysian Society of Surgery Hand, Malaysian Orthopaedics Association, Academy of Medicine, Royal Lake Club and Royal Selangor Golf Club.
On December 12, 1997 Azhar Merican married Norliza Ismail. They have a child.
