Early education mostly by private tuition. M‘Gill University, 1865-1869 (Bachelor of Arts). Yale University, 1869-1871 (Doctor of Philosophy).
Obtained First Rank Honours in Natural Science and Logan Gold Medal on Graduation, 1869, and later the Mineralogy Prize at Yale.
Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa, M‘Gill, 1899.
Appointed Lecturer in Chemistry at M‘Gill, 1871, and the following year succeeded Doctor T. Sterry Hunt as Chemist and Mineralogist to the Geological. Survey of Canada; discharged duties of both positions for seven years, and then retired from Geological. Survey in order to devote entire time to teaching work at M"Gill.
Appointed David Greenshields Professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy in 1883.
Foreign many years also lectured on both mining and metallurgy. Has been President of the National History.
