Later, he received an Master of Arts in English Literature from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he was acquainted with Charles, Prince of Wales. As a high ranking diplomat, Malik was posted to Moscow, Astana, Paris, Mexico, Havanna, Kingston, Jamaica (1974-1975), Rabat (1975-1978), Washington, District of Columbia (1986-1991) and Cairo (1991-1995). He was a former Director General of the Foreign Service of Pakistan.
Malik comes from an old prominent and aristocratic family of Lahore, who at one point were one of the richest families in the world, worth in excess of $900 million.
His relatives include Malik Ghulam Muhammad and the first Lord Mayor of Lahore, Pakistan.
